Edgar Wright to make documentary about Sparks.

Legendary Los Angeles band Sparks will play two hometown shows this November to complete their acclaimed Hippopotamus Tour. (14th and 15th)

“The brothers Ron and Russell Mael have spent almost half a century making incomparable music. They are unconventional and unpredictable, well read and playful, but above all, they are the last great band in the history of pop that you need to see, if you haven’t already. It will be a life changing experience.”

Sparks’ set this summer at Spain’s famous Primavera festival was “an enduring highlight of the festival; one that was loaded with idiosyncratic charm, oddball theatrics, pinks suits, soaring vocals, glistening pop and euphoric disco.” (Loud & Quiet Magazine)

The Hippopotamus world tour has seen Sparks and their impressive band play shows that are euphoric, vital, brilliant and uncompromisingly typical of a band that refuses to rest on their laurels. The new songs (from their acclaimed 2017 album ‘Hippopotamus’ including ‘Edith Piaf Said It Better Than Me’, ‘What The Hell Is It This Time?’ & ‘Missionary Position’) sound like classics, the classics (including ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both of Us’, ‘Tryouts For The Human Race’ and ‘The Number One Song In Heaven’) sound as vibrant and essential as ever, and audiences, and critics, have been left in no doubt this genre-hopping band is on sparkling form.

★★★★★ The Times (What a band)

★★★★★ The Independent (one of the most innovative outfits in pop) | Record Collector (What a night) ★★★★★  Classic Pop (The Mael brothers burn up the place) | Classic Rock (A brilliant night)

★★★★★ The Skinny (a band performing at their absolute best)

Following his 2017 film ‘Baby Driver’Edgar Wright is to direct a feature-length documentary on Sparks. The director announced that he recently filmed their concert at London’s O2 Forum and is currently gathering archival material on the band for the project. “I already shot their London concert in late May. The rest of it is to be determined and we’re currently scouring the archives,” Wright told IndieWire. “I have been a fan of them since I saw them on Top Of The Pops in 1979 — and when I had ‘Beat The Clock’ on vinyl.”

‘Hippopotamus’, Sparks’ 23rd album, received unanimous acclaim on its release in September 2017, subsequently appearing in many ‘Album Of The Year’ lists.

★★★★★ The Times | ★★★★★ The Independent ★★★★★ Daily Express | ★★★★★ Record Collector ★★★★ Mojo | ★★★★ Guardian | Classic Pop – 9/10 | Uncut – 8/10

Since storming into the charts, minds and airwaves in 1974 with This ‘Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both of Us’ from their album ‘Kimono My House’, Sparks have consistently created genre defying music and inspired – and continue to inspire and influence - generations of artists from Morrissey, Bjork & Depeche Mode to Franz Ferdinand, The Lemon Twigs & MGMT. Released on BMG, ‘Hippopotamus’ has been universally acclaimed with many critics declaring it to be one of the finest albums of the year and the pinnacle of the band’s career. Written, recorded and produced by Sparks ‘Hippopotamus’ is released on digital, CD, LP, picture disc and cassette formats.
